Frequently Asked Questions

How do I calculate sales tax?

Tax Amount = Price × (Tax Rate ÷ 100). For a $99.99 item with 8.25% sales tax: $99.99 × 0.0825 = $8.25 tax, so the total is $108.24. To work backwards from a tax-inclusive price: Pre-tax Price = Total ÷ (1 + Tax Rate ÷ 100). A $108 total at 8% tax: $108 ÷ 1.08 = $100 pre-tax.

Which US states have no sales tax?

Five US states have no statewide sales tax: Alaska, Delaware, Montana, New Hampshire, and Oregon (often remembered as "NOMAD"). However, Alaska and Montana allow local municipalities to impose their own sales taxes. Some states exempt certain goods like groceries and prescription drugs from sales tax even if a general rate applies.

What is the difference between sales tax and VAT?

Sales tax is collected only at the final point of sale (retail). Value Added Tax (VAT) is collected at every stage of the supply chain — production, distribution, and sale — and the final consumer bears the full cumulative tax. The US uses sales tax; most of Europe, Canada, and Australia use VAT or GST (Goods and Services Tax). VAT is typically already included in displayed prices.
