Frequently Asked Questions
How much should I tip at a restaurant?
The standard restaurant tip in the US is 15–20% for sit-down dining. Tip 15% for average service, 18% for good service, and 20–25% for excellent service. For buffets, 10% is common. For takeout and delivery, 10–15% is appropriate, with at least $2–3 on small orders.
Should I tip on the pre-tax or post-tax total?
Tipping on the pre-tax subtotal is technically correct, but tipping on the total (including tax) has become widely accepted. The difference is small — on a $60 meal with 8% tax, tipping 20% on the pre-tax amount is $12 vs. $12.96 on the total. Either is fine; the server will appreciate the generosity.
How do I split a tip fairly?
Calculate the total tip first (bill × tip percentage), then divide by the number of people. Our calculator handles this automatically. If each person ordered differently, split the bill proportionally by each person's share. Apps like Splitwise help track unequal splits over time.
